Idents - Group project

I'm doing group project. The work is about making 3 MTV idents.
We planed to create 3D character with 2D face. Everyone makes one own character.
I am almost done my character. I did modelling, rigging and binding but my character has error after binding, its legs were bended. The problem drive me crazy. Paul think it's about weight paint, then I should  redo bind. I'm still trying to fix the problem.

There's my music box.

I decided to delete link joints, make each body parts separated. It's might easer.
I have to finish the character in the weekend then doing some line tests such as character walk because my group will do footage and the rest of work next week.

My project - Bird

My character with texture.
It is just for hand in, not a final version for sure.
I need it to catch the deadline.
He is not happy at all!

A week before deadline

Rigging was more complicated than I thought. I built a basic skeleton and change some things in character design such as adding foot and tail for the bird. Now rigging tail is my problem. I want it automatic move when the body moves. I found a tutorial about rigging a cat tail and I will do the same to my character's tail.
I have some paper works need to be done and still have two more character sheets.
So my plan from today till deadline is:
- Finish rigging, binding the bird at this weekend.
- Finish paper work and character sheets before Tuesday.
- Then from Tuesday: Animation and texture.

Friday, October 14, 2011

Few updates.
That's my first character is done so far.

The beak was made split from body and I will do morphing for the beak.

My targets for next week.
- Saturday 15/10: The bird modeling will be done. Look at the photo above i just need to make wings so i think it's not hard to get it done. The beak's bird is not complete so this is the second thing I have to be done on Saturday.
- Sunday 16/10: Morphing the beak.
- Monday 17/10: Modeling the balloon. Actually the balloon just have to create a face, because the body shape is easy. I wonder if making balloon face in 3D or drawing in After Effects or Flash.
- Tuesday 18/10: Rigging the Bird.

Ok. Just it for now.
- I have 2 model sheets have to finish. One about characters in scene and one about facial expressions.

AD208

After 4 weeks back to school, i didn't do anything much. I don't wanna excuse so I am going to speed up from now. Try my best for this year.

I have to say that I didn't finish AD203 yet. Some writing works and the second character sheet need few more to be done. I try to finish all of them this weekend.
AD208 module start this week. I was doing research about charater animation and this is some examples I looked at.

just watch it by chance

Sayonara from Eric Bates on Vimeo.
I do love this style. Absolutely brilliant! Much more brilliant when watching 'making of video'. It's clear my thoughts about how to create the style. I can see it mixing of 3D character and 2D in compositing but  I still wonder how the process is done exactly. Very thankful the guy who made video because of uploading it.

Pictoplasma cont.3

Rilla Alexander
I like her work, her character walk but it was not really impressive. However her lecture was the most lecture I like and it's worth for me. I found an inspiration from her speak. I love the way she creates ideas. She does a lot of research, travel around, explore new culture, and she write down new ideas in her idea book, just like her character - Sozi. To end of her speak, she read her book for audience and she was like story teller with her all passion.

EL SENOR
To be honest, El Senor's lecture was not really good but his work itself was awesome and his sense of humour make the lecture was so interested. From the lecture I known his work and totally love it.
I had his sign in my Pictoplasma guide book. I am absolutely happy with it.

The Black-heart Gang
Ok. It is the artist I like the most in Pictoplasma. I was not satisfied with their lecture but still love their art work. I bought their book and read it and watched the movie many times after I was back from Berlin.

The tale of how
Their style is not what I try to follow but I still love it in somehow. I searched some video of The Black-heart Gang on youtube and watched a Making of The tale of How. Their style is very specific and their method is well arrange.

The Missing Link show.
This is the last activity I attended in Pictoplasma and it's worth. I had so much fun here. The first time in my life I was going on stage, danced and became one of crazy people.
I recorded some videos during the show.

Time plan for 5days to go!!!

Ahhhhhhhh.........

SWOT Analysis

I am going to use E4 Ident for my SWOT analysis because it is the nearest project I have completed.

Strengths: I found that I am quite good at digital skill, I can learn to use new software easily, not very fast yet not have any big problem. In this project I was introduced with After Effect and I think I will use the software more in the future.
Weaknesses: My biggest weakness is animatic so I tried to focus in animatic in the project. I improved a little bit when did walking movement, but I still forgot facial expression. Watching whole video again I saw timing is still my problem. In addition I am so easy to be despondent when I face to difficult things.
Opportunities: From this project I put my name on internet through upload my work on Youtube. I will submit the animation to the E4 website for their competition but I want to fix my E4 a little bit before submitting. Thus I will able to get more feedback from audience and this is the way my work has known.
Threats: My threat is running out of time, lose control when I face to pressure work and to be despondent.

Pictoplasma cont.2

I got mad at blogspot yesterday when I tried to compose entry Berlin trip and something was going wrong in HTML that I cant fix or edit, then I had to post entry though I haven't finished.
Today I'm going to update part 2 of the trip. This part is gonna be about Pictoplasma festival during the rest of week I've been in Berlin. I attended various lectures, screening, workshop and the last show - The Missing Link.
To talk about lectures, I watched some lectures in first day in Babylon including Jeremy Ville, Matt Jones, Rilla Alexander, Mc Bess, Nomint, Christoph Niemann. These artists' work was interested me a lot so I wanted to see their talk. However, just few artist made an impression on me, so I talk about some lectures I found inspiring at Pictoplasma.

Matt Jones
I first saw his character walk - Mr Tea in Mc Bess space and it was not really impressive but after attended Matt Jones' lecture I wanted to found out more about his character. I have to say that I didn't go to his character walk space before lectures. I like the way he created his idea from life. He love to drink tea then he created his character - Mr A cup of Tea. That's quite funny yet interest and good way to have  new ideas.

Then I went to Matt Jones character walk and attended his workshop.

His character walk was a series of vinyl characters in tea cups which were made by a long list of artists from around the world based on and using his own base character.
I saw so many good character designs. It made me want to collect all of this but I cant obviously, I just bought a Mr Tea and luckily I have limited edition one. That's so happy!

Oh, about workshop, it didn't really work for me to be honest.

Berlin trip - Pictoplasma Festival

Well, I went back from Berlin trip a month ago. It's such a long time to update my blog with information on the trip.
Firstly, Berlin is so amazing place. I never go to anywhere have street art everywhere like Berlin. So so so... impressed and surprised! They draw on any space wall, very high building. Most of art work looks awesome, very good character design, very humour.
The wall along the street in font of hotel was fill up with graffiti, painting. That was my first impression about Berlin.
This painting amazed me very much. It was big and tall. When I saw it clearly, it made me a little bit scared because it was a tons of human pile on each other.

PICTOPLASMA !!!

First day of Pictoplasma Festival, after registration, we had a long long day walking around streets to find more than 20 galleries of Pictoplasma artist. I was very excited because of seeing many good stuff.

Registration place.
 CRIM Collective - Mechanicalism

I really like these character design.

JEREMY DOWER - Canis mortuus familiaris
 RILLA ALEXANDER - Her Idea
JEREMY VILLE

ANNA HRACHOVEC

MC BESS - The pirates are dead
This picture was taken in font of Mc Bess gallery. It was weird character but funny :)).
When we went to his place, he was drawing. I was excited to see an artist working and his painting was so great even though it wasn't done.

BEN&JULIA - 3 moments in the life of Kaluk

AMANDINE URRUTY

VILLE SAVIMAA

3753% TORDAL

TE BEE KINGDOM - Bee invasion

THE BLACK HEART GANG

My work.

This is project 2. Doing storyboard.

And it is project 3 - module AD105.

2/5/2011 - a few update...

I've not updated my blog since I went to Berlin. It's quite a long time. I have to say that I haven't done lots work. These days I'm modelling eyes' character, I think about how to make eyelid to blinking easily. Then I decided to do morphing eyelid.
This is an eyelid I'm done so far. It's just base shape for morphing.
It's such a long time from learning morphing in C4D, so I totally forgot how to do it.
These are videos for morphing tutorial I found in Youtube.

Now I can begin to do eyelid morphing.

Punga

There are some works of PUNGA.

The video below is so interesting. The character is simple and quite flat like 2D style even though it's made in 3D. I love the idea that kid wearing just underwear play with the hand to propagate the underwear rule for children. That's cute and colorful character design.

Kiko & The Hand from PUNGA on Vimeo.

3 videos below have the same style. The character is 3D but the background was made look like 2D cut-out animation and I think all done in 3D. All colour and texture were used look like paper texture so the general theme of the animation is no diffirent than cut-out animation.

Temaiken - Cheetah from PUNGA on Vimeo.

Temaiken - Shark from PUNGA on Vimeo.

Temaiken - Monkey from PUNGA on Vimeo.

Week plan 21/03/2011

I think I am little bit slower than the rate of progress. I have not done my character design.
Tasks for this week :
Monday: Finish character design and begin 3D character modeling. Upload 3 Favourite 3D animations.
Tuesay: continue to do some research and modeling.
Wednesday to end of week: Finish 3D modeling.

Gluko and Lennon

I just could not believe that these character are 3D before Dave showed me how to made it. Gluko and Lennon are very simplistic design but yet effective. I love the way they look and act. The theme of this video reminded me TADO, Friend with you and Fons Schiedon. Bright and colourful.

Gluko & Lennon ENG from Gluko & Lennon on Vimeo.

When I first saw the film and think about techniques, I thought it made in Flash or Affect Effect or other softwares which are always used to make 2D animation. However now I knew the technique and I absolutely love it. I think it is a good idea to make 3D animation look like 2D style. This can ensure two things: first, the film still follows 2D style which I always look towards, secondly making film in 3D is quicker and easier for animated.

Animatic G&L from Gluko & Lennon on Vimeo.

I want to thank the guy who make Gluko and Lennon because they also uploaded the making of video. This video show how the timing was counted and how the video was animated.

3D animation examples

As a part of new project, I look at some 3d animations.

This film I have just seen in class.
It's called Cat Shit One (I don't understand the name, to be honest). The film is really good. I like the idea that takes the bunny into the action.

I found this video about IDA entertainment who made CatShitOne. Watch from minute 1:00, this part talk a little bit about CatShitOne (CSO), thought this part I know they did CSO by motion capture, not only 3D software (may be Maya, 3D Max or Cinema 4D).

My Estings

This is my E4 ident for AD109 module.

Week plan 28/02/2011

Last week I have done rough morphing exercise, I have tested and fixed it, so this week I'll finish this exercise.

Week plan 21/02/11

I know it's quite late to make week plan but I already had plan in my mind from the begin of week. I just forgot update my blog on Monday, so I do it now.

Monday - Tuesday
Morphing exercise. Done all frame, just pencil work, then test it, capture by Dragon Stop motion. Note what things need to fix.

Wednesday
Working on E4 project. For this project I have two part of work. First, the character's movement, I make it in After Effect, then I have to make some assets for character's expression. The second is the metamorphosis of E4 logo. I am doing the first part.
Done the first part today. Get some ideas for the second part.

AD102: I already done Monday - Tuesday work. The problem is that some scenes move too fast, I need to add some frames in between.

Thursday
Continue work on E4. Drawing assets for morphing E4 logo. For AD109, I try to do all in After Effect, because I have few time to work now so I don't want to be bother myself with which technique I should do.

Friday
I will go to Edinburgh to do visa for Berlin trip.

Weekend
Finish rough E4 ident.

Morphing examples

I just skip E4 project for few day to do morphing exercise. I already found 2 objects to metamorphosis. There are dragonfly and helicopter. I found some morphing video which are very good examples.

This video make a strong impression on me.

E4 Ident examples

I have watched some E4 Ident last week. Today I am going to post 5 examples which I like.

The below video is simple but yet so funny. However the thing make me so interest is the animatic that I need to improve.

Idents

I'm totally happy because finally I know this kind of videos which i usually watch on TV is called Ident. I always get exciting when seeing Ident video. It's very short but yet very creative in my point of view.
Thus I happy to know the keyword to search these videos. There are some examples which make me interested.

MTV Idents 1981-1983
That's so awesome. This ident is clay animation and stop motion, very traditional style.

Cartoon Network ID
There are a series of CN ident videos on Vimeo. It's all crazy funny. It animated in Maya but look like clay animation. That's cool!

It´s Magic - Cartoon Network ID shortie from Meindbender on Vimeo.

This is CN Ident of a guy who made it for his own project or for a competition (I'm not sure).

CN Float from Matt Frodsham on Vimeo.

Pixar Ident
This is the ident video that I always enjoy watching. Suddenly I have an idea for my E4 video :D

Disney channel Ident.

Time plan

Monday
